Yoko Ono Unveils Boldly Sexual Men's Fashion Line

Last Thursday evening Yoko Ono launched her limited-edition fashion line called “Fashions for Men: 1969-2012” inspired by a series of fashion sketches she had done for her late husband John Lennon.

The line shows that at the age of 79 Ono hasn’t lost her knack for shocking conventional sensibilities with her daringly avante garde vision. Models paraded in pants with mesh cutouts revealing the buttocks, a pink mesh shirt, pants with large contrasting handprints on the crotch and butt, and other innovations that call attention to sexual parts of the male anatomy.

The fashions were produced for Umberto Leon’s high-concept label Opening Ceremony based on sketches Ono had done as a gift for Lennon for their 1969 wedding.

“I was inspired to create ‘Fashions for Men,’ amazed at how my man was looking so great,” said Ono’s statement. “I felt it was a pity if we could not make clothes emphasizing his very sexy bod. So, I made this whole series with love for his hot bod, and gave it to him as a wedding present.”

Ono and Leon came together for the project after meeting three years ago at the opening of Opening Ceremony’s Tokyo store.

“We went as close as we could to what she had originally envisioned for John back then. It’s exciting to see it all,” Leon said.

“I think they realized it perfectly,” said Sean Lennon, the 37-year-old son of Ono and the rock legend. “It wasn’t an easy thing to do because the original sketches were very avant-garde and then super-conceptual and they managed to realize it in a way that actually seems wearable. I’m getting the suit – I want the pink one because I just have to go all the way!”

Yoko Ono was born in Tokyo to a wealthy banking family. She was raised in both Japan and the US. Her anti-war activities with John Lennon remain iconic images of the late ’60s and early ’70s. Lennon acknowledged her as his spiritual muse. Ono also made a splash in her own right as a daringly avante garde performance artist and musician. Even after Lennon was shot and killed outside their Manhattan apartment on December 8, 1980 Ono remained a cultural icon as well as a voice for social change.
