Korean Export Car Prices Hit New High

The average export price of Korean cars for the first half of the year jumped 13.9 percent over last year to a new record high of $13,499, reported the Ministry of Knowledge Economy Thursday.

The rise is credited to improved quality competitiveness and a higher proportion of large sedans and recreational vehicles. Small cars shrank from a 52.4 percent share of exports during the first half of 2010 to 46.7 percent this year. The proportion of RVs rose from 30.1 percent to 33.9 percent.

In the U.S. market for mid-size and large luxury cars, in June and July Hyundai’s Equus and Genesis models outsold Toyota’s Lexus 7,189 to 6,745.

The average export price of Korean cars is still far less than Japan’s $22,387.
