China Mobile Aims to Provide Global 4G Access for 2 Bil.

China Mobile will build over 500,000 TD-LTE 4G base stations to provide internet access for two billion people around the world by 2014, according to the three-year plan announced Friday by the world’s largest telecom by subscribers.

China Mobile’s plans to expand China’s proprietary, state-sponsored TD-LTE service to the entire world from the original Chinese market relies in part on close cooperation with Taiwanese companies like HTC and MediaTek.

One near-term project calls for partnering with Taiwanese telecom provider FETnet to build a “wireless city” network for the coastal city of Ningbo in Zhejiang province. The tie-up will allow China Mobile to offer value-added mobile services and online reading services.

China Mobile will also pair up with Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s leading telecom, to build similar coverage for Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province.

China Mobile also plans to launch 2G, 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi services in China’s vast interior regions, according to CEO Li Yue.
