Tech Jobs Fuel Asian Surge in Washington’s Richest Cities

Driven by an influx of Indian and Chinese residents in the Seattle area, Washington's Asian population has increased by 350,000 in the past decade.
A nearly 350,000 population increase over the past decade has made Washington the number five Asian American state, up from seven, with a 13.1% Asian percentage.
Much of the state’s growth has been driven by a near doubling of both the Chinese and Indian populations of the Seattle metro area.
The most concentrated growth has been a trebling of the Indian population inside Seattle city limits, bringing the city’s overall Asian population to 22.1%.
The neighboring cities of Bellevue, Kirkland, and Redmond, with median household incomes over $135,000, have also seen Asian growth of over 60% over the past decade.
Bellevue, Sammamish, and Redmond all have Asian populations exceeding 40%. It’s no coincidence that Sammamish has the highest median household income in the United States.
For Asian Americans the Seattle area’s growth is tied to demand from strong technology and aerospace sectors centered around Boeing, Microsoft and Amazon — all companies in which Asian Americans are greatly overrepresented.
