Stealth Taiwanese American PGA Champ Looks to Repeat
By James Moreau | 15 May, 2025
Xander Schauffele isn’t favored to repeat his 2024 Valhalla victory but is no stranger to dramatic stealth wins.
Xander Schauffele, the world’s number 3 ranked golfer, is set to defend his PGA Championship title at Quail Hollow Club this week in Charlotte. The current odds for the 31-year-old Taiwanese American to repeat this weekend are +2000 (the amount of profit for wagering $100), placing him as the 5th favorite amongst sportsbooks.
Schauffele’s May 2024 victory at Louisville’s Valhalla Golf Club earned him $3.33 million, his largest single tournament winnings. Though he set a record low for a major championship with a 21-under-par 263 total, his first major victory came in dramatic fashion — a final hole birdie for a one stroke win. Schauffele also tied the record for the lowest opening round in a major with a 62.
Just two months later he won the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon, taking home a $3.1 million check and becoming the first golfer since 2018 to win multiple majors in the same year.
In 2017, his first year on the tour, the San Diego native won Rookie of the Year and the $1.57 million prize at The Tour Championship at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club. He finished 32nd worldwide after beginning the year at 299.
To date Schauffele’s PGA TOUR prize money stands at over $58.9 million with total career earnings of over $100 million.
Schauffele won a gold medal for Team USA in the men’s individual event at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Japan, where his Taiwan-born mother was raised. Schauffele is also married to Maya Lowe, who is half Japanese and speaks fluent Japanese.
