Ancient Asian Superfoods Power Modern Wellness

Today’s most talked-about health foods are ancient Asian remedies quietly reshaping modern nutrition.


Before the term “superfoods” was trending, Asians were already using these ingredients as ancient remedies. 

Fermented foods have been a popular trend this year, except it’s been a cornerstone of many Asian diets. Kimchi, miso, and natto received plenty  of attention across social media and since gut health is a huge topic in wellness, fermented foods are consistently celebrated for their role in digestion and overall balance. Fermentation supports a healthy microbiome while still preserving nutrients, or in modern terms, “probiotic-rich”. 

Another superfood that sparked many conversations this year is shilajit, a resin that comes from South Asia that has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Shilajit can be found in the Himalayas and Andes Mountains and is known to be a rejuvenator stacked with minerals. Today, shilajit has been introduced into recent wellness trends in modern ways. Gummies, capsules, and liquid drops are all different ways shilajit can now be consumed and are often promoted as an energy booster and for hormone health. 

Finally, reishi mushrooms emerged as a standout superfood in the wellness industry. This fungi dates way back in East Asian traditions as it is known as the “mushroom of immortality” because of its use for immune support and longevity. These glossy mushrooms have been brewed into tea for years to assist with stress and fatigue. Today it can be found in powders and gummies that are marketed as supplements that help with sleep and calmness. 

These superfoods are representing a larger cultural shift reminding us that just because something is trending, doesn’t mean it is new and as Asian ingredients continue to influence modern wellness there is a growing recognition that these health movements are rooted in ancient tradition.
