"If you were to do a little research on the history of Germany in the 1930s, you would see so many parallels that would scare the hell out of you. There's the whole macho man ethos that the administration is selling, these mass grabs of families and breaking them up and shipping them out of the country, or some of these camps.
The rallies built on mass protests in June reflect frustrations of Trump's critics with policies ranging from immigration and education to national security and healthcare that have reshaped the government and democratic norms with unprecedented speed since he took office in January.
"We want to show our support for democracy and for fighting what is right," said Alison Elliott, a protester dressed the Statue of Liberty.
"If you were to do a little research on the history of Germany in the 1930s, you would see so many parallels that would scare the hell out of you," said Bob, a protester wearing a cap emblazoned with the words "Grumpy Old Vietnam Vet".
Since Trump took office 10 months ago, his administration has ramped up immigration enforcement, moved to slash the federal workforce and cut funding to elite universities over such campus flashpoints as pro-Palestinian protests against Israel's war in Gaza, ethnic and racial diversity and transgender athletes.
